The borough also has a lot of trees. Wimbledon Common and Wimbledon Park are huge green spaces, and the residential streets in Wimbledon Village, Raynes Park, and Morden Park are lined with mature oaks, planes, and limes. Tree roots can travel 20 metres or more in search of water, and a warm, damp drain pipe in winter is an irresistible target. Once a root hair finds its way through a hairline crack or a loose joint, it grows into a dense fibrous mass that can completely block a 100mm pipe within a couple of years. We see more root ingress in the areas closest to Wimbledon Common and the parks than almost anywhere else in South West London.
Then there’s the age of the housing stock. Wimbledon Village has some genuinely old buildings — Georgian and Victorian houses with brick-built drains and cast iron soil pipes that are pushing 150 years old. The 1930s semis in Raynes Park and Morden were built with salt-glazed clay pipes that are now 80-90 years old, and the joints are failing. The post-war council estates in Mitcham and Pollards Hill used concrete and pitch-fibre pipes, which have their own problems — pitch-fibre pipes soften and deform over time, collapsing inward under the weight of the soil above. And the modern developments around Colliers Wood and Wimbledon Stadium have plastic pipework that’s generally fine, but the connections to the older mains are often problematic.
The Merton Drain Problems You’re Most Likely to Hit
Different parts of Merton have very different drainage profiles. Here’s what we see most often, area by area:
Wimbledon Village & Wimbledon Town. The oldest infrastructure in the borough. Georgian and Victorian houses with brick-built drains, cast iron downpipes, and shared drainage runs between terraced properties. The restaurants and cafes on the High Street and around the Village put a lot of fat, oil, and grease into the system, and the old brick sewers have rough internal surfaces that catch everything. If you live in a flat above a shop on the Broadway or in a Victorian terrace near the Common, your drains are connected to the same network as the commercial kitchens, and fatbergs in the shared runs are a recurring problem.
Raynes Park & West Barnes. Mostly 1930s semis and detached houses, built during the interwar expansion of the London suburbs. The drains are salt-glazed clay pipes with rigid joints, and they’re now 80+ years old. The ground movement in Raynes Park’s clay soil is particularly bad because the area has a lot of large garden trees — the roads around Cannon Hill Lane and Bushey Road are lined with mature oaks and planes whose roots are actively searching for the moisture inside those old clay pipes. Root blockages in Raynes Park are so common we practically know which streets to check first.
Mitcham & Pollards Hill. A mix of Victorian terraces around Mitcham town centre, interwar housing, and large post-war council estates. The post-war estates are where the real problems live — they were built with pitch-fibre pipes, a material that was supposed to be a cheap alternative to clay but has turned out to be a disaster. Pitch-fibre absorbs moisture, softens, and deforms over time, and the pipes literally collapse inward under the weight of the soil. If you’re in a 1950s or 1960s property in Mitcham or on the Pollards Hill estate and you’ve got recurring blockages, there’s a good chance the pipe has collapsed and needs replacing. A CCTV survey will tell you immediately.
Morden & Morden Park. Mostly 1930s semis and detached houses, similar to Raynes Park, plus some newer developments around Morden Park and St. Helier. The 1930s housing has the same old clay pipe problems, and the newer developments have plastic pipework that’s generally reliable but often poorly connected to the older mains. Morden Park itself is a large green space with mature trees, and the roads bordering the park — like Morden Park Avenue and Hillcross Avenue — have significant root ingress problems. The water table in Morden is also higher than average because of the proximity to the River Wandle and its tributaries, and high groundwater means more silt ingress through cracked pipes.
Colliers Wood & Wimbledon Stadium. The newer end of the borough, with modern flats and townhouses built on former industrial land around the Wandle Valley. The pipework is modern plastic, which is good, but the ground here is alluvial silt and made ground from the old industrial sites, and it settles unevenly. That differential settlement puts stress on the pipe joints, and we see a lot of displaced joints and misaligned pipes in this area. The commercial properties around the retail park and the industrial estates also put a lot of grease and chemicals into the system.
What to Do When Your Merton Drain Blocks
If you’ve got a blocked drain in Merton, the first thing to figure out is whose problem it is. Here’s how:
- If only one appliance is affected — the kitchen sink won’t drain but the toilet and shower are fine — the blockage is in that appliance’s waste pipe. It’s your responsibility, and it’s usually straightforward to clear.
- If multiple appliances are affected — the toilet gurgles when you run the bath, or water comes up in the shower when you flush — the blockage is in the main drain serving your property. Still your responsibility, but it needs professional equipment.

Every flush and every tap adds more water to an already full pipe, and in a Merton property with a shared drainage run — which is most of them in Wimbledon Village, Raynes Park, and Mitcham — that water has to go somewhere. It often comes up through the downstairs toilet or the outside manhole cover, and that’s a mess you don’t want to deal with.
Don’t pour drain cleaner down. The caustic chemicals in supermarket drain cleaners generate heat to dissolve organic matter, but in a completely blocked pipe they sit in one place and can damage old clay, cast iron, or pitch-fibre pipes. They also create a hazardous sludge that makes the engineer’s job harder. And they almost never work on a full blockage anyway — you’ll just end up with a pipe full of toxic chemicals and still no drainage.
Don’t try DIY drain rods. The cheap plastic rods from the hardware shop are fine for a hair clog in a sink U-bend. They are not fine for a blockage in the main drain. They snap, they get stuck, and we’ve pulled more broken rod sections out of Merton drains than we can count. A broken rod inside your drain is now an additional blockage on top of the original one, and it’s harder to clear than the first one was.

- Watch what goes down the kitchen sink.
