Drain Unblocking in Sidcup — Local Specialists
Sidcup is a quiet suburban area within the London Borough of Bexley. The surrounding area includes the Foots Cray Meadows nature reserve and the River Cray, which can contribute to waterlogged ground near the town. Many properties in Sidcup were built in the 1930s’50s, and the drainage from that era is now reaching the end of its design life.
The dominant problem across Sidcup is ageing post-war drainage. Most of the town’s semi-detached and detached houses from the 1930s onward were built with salt-glazed clay pipes laid on clay ground, and after eighty-odd years those joints are opening up and allowing the surrounding root systems — particularly the large garden trees common on streets around Blackfen and Foots Cray — to work their way in. The River Cray and the ponds at Foots Cray Meadows keep the local water table high, and that soggy ground accelerates ground movement that bellies (sags) older pipe runs. We are called out constantly to DA14 and DA15 for slow-draining soil stacks and collapsed collars that have blocked completely after a spell of wet weather.
Housing stock here is largely 1930s’50s semis and 1970s estates rather than Victorian terraces, which means most drain runs are long, straight and set in front gardens under driveways. That layout is good news for access but means a blockage in the middle of the run is awkward to reach, so we rely on high-pressure jetting and CCTV surveys to pinpoint the fault before digging. We handle everything from clearing kitchen sink and toilet waste lines, to replacing failed clay collars with modern push-fit PVC, and jetting the long runs that serve the larger homes near the golf course and the schools along the old Sidcup bypass. For the many homes converted into flats along the High Street and the shops on the parade, we also service the grease lines that keep shared drains clear.
The high water table around Foots Cray Meadows means the ground never drains as well as the chalky parts of Bexley, so we advise checking your inspection chamber is clear before autumn storms, and having roots cut and pipes jetting where a survey has flagged intrusion. If you are buying one of the older Sidcup semis, arrange a CCTV survey of the drains before exchange — it will show you the true condition of the clay run before you commit.
